Observe the battle from kite balloon The main point of the program of the commemorative event of Austerlitz, that is held on the weekend closest to the 2nd december, is a battle re-enactment under the Santon hill, near the village of Tvarozna (Bosenitz). Become a war observer, observe the battle from kite balloon with field-glass, make photos or video. The price is CZK 5000 per flight (for approx. 20 minutes) for any number of passengers (up to 4). History The first military use of kite balloons to observe the movements of the enemy on the battlefield was in 1794, during the siege of Maubeuge, and later at the famous battle of Fleurus, won by the French. The balloon's diameter was 9-10 meters, it was held by two cords of 540 meters. It is said that the balloon really had an influnce on the outcome of the battle ; more by it's appearance and impression it had on the French and on the Austrians, than by the information transmitted to the commander in chief. The balloon was used also during the siege of Mayence. The french observer flew about 300 meters over the fortress at the distance of half range of cannon, and saw the ennemy position in great detail. The last use of these balloons came with the Napoleon's egyptian campaign, after it's end the units were disbanded. The reason mosty was the long and technically difficult preparation of the balloon for action, that did not answer the strategy of fast marching and maneuvering army.
