War and Peace
by Sergey Prokofief

Opera in 13 sceneries, libretto by S. Prokofiev a M. Mendelson-Prokofieva after the novel of the same name by L. N.  Tolstoy

The composer Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) belongs to the top artists of the Russian music culture of the 20th century and his work is a stable part of repertoir of imprtant orchestras, and corps de ballet and opera. The opera War and Peace based on the world famous novel by L. N. Tolstoy is one of the best Prokopief’s works. From the extensive novel the composer accentuatess two scenic plans – the love story of Natasha Rostova, Andrey Bolkonski and Pierre Bezuchov, and war scenes from the Napoleon’s campaing in Russia. It creates an interesting scenic counterpoint where the devouting lyrics fade into extreme drama. All this is wedded into master polishness of psychology of particular figures.
